Tinwald viaduct under repair 1-19 December

Published: 28 November 2025

Contractors working for KiwiRail will be undertaking repairs on the Tinwald viaduct from 1-19 December and there will be no access for pedestrians or cyclists.

The viaduct has been closed to vehicles since it was struck by a digger being towed by a vehicle in June, and from Monday there will be no access for pedestrians or cyclists either.

KiwiRail said the impact beam had been damaged and needed to be replaced. The repairs will take place Monday-Friday, between 6am and 6pm, in the period Monday 1 December to Friday 19 December.

Neighbours on Melcombe Street are being advised of the work today as there will be noise from heavy machinery. There will be a full road closure of the underpass for the duration of the work and alternative access across the rail corridor is via level crossings at Compton Street or Lagmhor Road.

The work zone will be fenced off on either side of the viaduct to prevent public access.

KiwiRail is asking residents not to take shortcuts across the rail corridor and cross only at official level crossings, as trains and other rail vehicles are still expected.

“Our staff are mindful of our rail neighbours and will work hard to minimise any disturbance to get this essential work done as quickly and quietly as possible. However, despite their best efforts, this work may cause some disturbance from machinery and vehicles moving on site.

“We apologise for any inconvenience in relation to the traffic detour and our work.”

Neighbouring residents with queries about this work should contact KiwiRail’s Community Engagement Team via contactus@kiwirail.co.nz or 0800 801 070 ext 43042.
