Safe passage for Hampstead students

Hampstead School has a new student crossing on Oxford Street, with fixed signs and student patrols that can stop traffic.

New signs were delivered to the school this week, thanks to Fulton Hogan. Council has also helped by making the crossing and kerb more prominent.

Group Manager of Infrastructure Neil McCann said the new kea crossing would help students safely cross Oxford Street on their way to and from school.

“Having big bright signs that swing out and stop traffic is ideal and it is the same as the school crossing on Wellington Street.”

Hampstead School has about 315 children, and many walk to school. Another safe crossing point has been welcomed.

A kea crossing only operates when a school patrol and two fluorescent orange crossing point flags are present; when there’s no patrol and signs, the crossing point is just like any other section of road.

The kea crossings also have a line marked on the road, where drivers need to stop if the patrol signs are out.

School patrols are trained by Police to use the kea crossings safely; children are also taught to obey the school patrol’s instructions.

Mr McCann said drivers need to adjust if they regularly used Oxford Street at times when the patrol would be in action.

“Drivers need to stop if the crossing signs are out, or be prepared to stop on command of the school patrol.”
