Paws and learn: The joys of owning a dog

Thinking about getting a dog? Or already have one and want to learn more?
Join us for a relaxed and friendly Dog Ownership Workshop on Tuesday 21 October, from 6pm-7.30pm in the event space in the Ashburton Library.
There’ll be a panel of dog experts, including a local vet and a dog trainer, who will share lots of great information.
The Paws and Learn event is organised by Keep Learning Mid Canterbury and Council.
Group Manager of Compliance and Development Ian Hyde said there were about 6700 dogs in the district and almost all were registered.
“Registering your dog is the first step in being a responsible dog owner, but there’s lots of other things to know about owning a dog and this free event is a great starting point, whether you are thinking about getting a dog or already have one.”
The Dog Ownership Workshop will cover:
- Understanding your dog’s needs – food, exercise, socialisation, and enrichment
- Basic training and behaviour tips – how to encourage good habits early on
- Council rules and responsibilities – dog registration, microchipping, leash laws, and local bylaws
- Local tips - dog exercise areas, dog parks etc.
- Keeping your dog (and others) safe – managing aggression, barking, and roaming
- Health and wellbeing – regular vet care, vaccinations, and parasite prevention
- Dog etiquette in public places – tips for parks, beaches, and walking trails
Mr Hyde said there would be a chance to ask questions, and some doggy giveaways.
“While the workshop is about dogs, this is a people-only event so please leave your dogs at home.”
Tickets to the free event are available from humanitix.
