MAYOR: The spirit of Christmas is alive

Ashburton Mayor Liz McMillan
It’s hard to believe that we are so close to the end of the year, the last two months have gone fast.
I have had a full calendar with lots of different events and I really appreciate all the words of support I have had while I've been out and about.
While I enjoy getting out of the office, the coming work programme will see some serious hours at my desk.
We have had our last council meeting for the year and I am pleased how the new councillors have gelled and are working together. We have some big topics on the table at the moment, including rates capping and local government reform, and I think we’ll all be doing some extra-curricular reading over the break.
The 2026 year brings many challenges with the new second bridge, annual plan, and of course understanding how those new reforms coming from central government will impact us. The devil will be in the detail, and a lot of that we’re yet to see.
With the lead up to Christmas, it is great to see our townships are nice and busy.
Now is a good time to support local businesses – I encourage you to shop locally for gifts or purchase a voucher for a local experience. The hospitality venues will also appreciate your support.
A project dear to my heart for nearly two years has taken a great stride recently is the bike skills park, now set to get underway in March. The facility in the Ashburton Domain will be called Tarbotton RideSmart Park, to recognise the generosity of Tarbotton Land & Civil in bringing it to life and I want to thank all those involved in getting the project to this point. You have been the super-charged version of Santa's elves.
It’s not too late for others to lend their support or sponsorship to this community-funded project!
I’ve enjoyed seeing lots of smiles from residents who attended Light up the Night and the new mini golf course at EA Networks Centre continues to generate fun.
I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy new year. I hope you get a chance to put your feet up at some stage.
