Lake Hood water quality update: March 2025

Council is keeping a close eye on water in the canals at Lake Hood, as warm weather increases concerns about an algal bloom.
Water continues to be redirected into the canals to assist circulation and the weed harvester is also being focussed on the residential waterways.
Group Manager of Infrastructure and Open Spaces Neil McCann said the wider lake area was looking good, but some areas in the canals needed more water to flow through them.
“Circulation is key and we remain in alert mode. We still have water coming into the lake extension and canals from the intake at the Ashburton River and we’re also keeping the weed harvester going, as the mechanical action helps move water around. Unfortunately the river flow has reduced, which impacts the amount of water we can take for the lake.
“We’re doing everything we can to avoid algal levels rising to a point that a contact recreation warning would be issued.”
The lake continues to be tested weekly by Environment Canterbury.
Cyanobacteria was detected in the lake and canals in the previous two summers and Council has been working with specialist consultants on future options for improving water quality.
Mr McCann said Council, in conjunction with Health New Zealand, would advise the public if there was any change in the water quality at the lake.
“Algal blooms can form very quickly, especially if the water is warm, and can be harmful if ingested by people and dogs, or other animals. People should use their commonsense and apply caution if they are having recreation contact with the lake water, like swimming, water-skiing or kayaking.”
