SH1 Tinwald project update: Viaduct to close temporarily in New Year

Published: 20 December 2023

The Tinwald viaduct will be closed for about six weeks from Wednesday 10 January as part of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi’s current work to improve the State Highway 1 corridor through Tinwald.

There will be no access through the viaduct during this period.

At the same time, Melcombe Street will also be down to one lane, with portable traffic signals managing vehicles, while contractors continue work on three new raised safety platforms designed to slow traffic and keep cyclists safe.

NZTA said the works would also include new kerb and channel and footpath construction, the installation of a pedestrian crossing and carriageway resurfacing.

A temporary road closure may be necessary on Carters Terrace, at the highway, but that is not yet confirmed.

NZTA’s SH1 improvement project includes new traffic signals at the intersection of SH1, Lagmhor Road and Agnes Street and they will be installed in the new year. Contractors have been preparing the intersection, installing underground services, resurfacing the highway and painting new lanes over the past months; Lagmhor Road and Agnes Street are currently controlled by stop signs and will stay that way until the new signals are installed and commissioned.

As part of improving connector roads to the State Highway signals, a temporary closure is also planned for the intersection of McMurdo and Graham Streets from 15 January to 29 February. The closure will affect only west-bound traffic and the contractors will keep access for vehicles heading towards Lake Hood; there will be no access from McMurdo Street onto Graham Street.

Detours will be in place, and resident access remains. Please be alert for changing traffic management.

The work at this intersection includes new kerb and channel and footpath construction, and carriageway resurfacing.

Two other road closures on Council roads have been advised for the new year.

Elizabeth Avenue, from West Town Belt to Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road, will be closed from 7 January to 28 January while a sewer connection for a new subdivision is installed. Detours will be available.

William Street and Moore Street intersection to William Street and Tancred Street intersection will be closed from 8 January to 1 February, though access for residents remains.

This is a continuation of the major project to renew the sewer main along William Street.
