Keep your furry friends safe from fireworks

Pets and fireworks don’t mix, so as Guy Fawkes night approaches you should think about how you can keep them safe.
Dogs, cats and other pets have far more sensitive hearing than ours, and they have no understanding of the concept of celebrations with fireworks. The noises and flashes frighten them.
Here are some tips to ensure their safety this Guy Fawkes:
1. Keep pets indoors - Try and keep pets indoors throughout the night - allow pets extra exercise during the day and a chance to go to the toilet.
2. Block all exits - Get your pets in before dark and secure cat-flaps, doors and windows to stop them escaping.
3. Minimise noise - Make sure all curtains, blinds and windows are closed to minimise the noise and light effect of the fireworks.
4. Try and stay with your pet - Try and avoid leaving your pet alone at home and if they panic, distract them with a game or toy.
5. Allow your pet somewhere to hide - Set up some extra bedding and blankets under a table or bed to help them feel safe and secure.
6. Drown out the noise - Playing the radio or television at a louder volume helps drown out the noise of the fireworks.
7. Feed your pet a high-carb meal - Feeding your pet a high-carbohydrate meal will help them feel full, sleepy and calm during the evening. There are also products such as calming tablets, sprays and diffusers that reduce pet anxiety.
8. Make pets identifiable - Make sure your pet is wearing some form of identification in case they run away or get lost.
