Motorists are being advised to be extra mindful of their speed around Ashburton, Lake Hood, Lauriston and at Lakes Camp/Clearwater later this month, as new signposted limits come into force.

Ashburton District Council is adjusting speed limits on a number of local roads as part of its 2020 Speed Limit Review.

The new permanent speed limits will be in place from Friday 30 April.

The changes reflect continued growth and development around the outskirts of towns as well as changed traffic conditions, and are being implemented to ensure drivers are travelling at appropriate speeds for the area.

Council Infrastructure Services Group Manager, Neil McCann says the Speed Limit Review identified several sections of road of concern and considered requests from the community that had been made in recent years.

“The last time we conducted a district-wide speed limit review was in 2012 and our region has grown considerably since that time.

“With the help of residents, we were able to identify areas where the limits just aren’t as safe as they should be anymore. These new speeds will rectify that and help to ensure residents can get to their destination safe and sound.”

A total of 50 road sites across Ashburton, Lake Hood, Lauriston and at Lakes Camp/Clearwater will be impacted.

This will be the second round of speed limit changes to be rolled out following the review. The first batch came into effect in December 2020 and focused on roads in Tinwald, Fairton, Mt Somers, Mayfield, Methven and the Ashburton Business Estate.
