May 2021 Flood Event Recovery Update for 1 July 2021

Published: 1 July 2021

This week we passed the 4-week mark since the May flood event which has affected a number of Ashburton District residents. While for many, life has returned to normal, Council is conscious that for some in our community, the return to normal will be considerably longer.

Council has four key work streams in-house that are supporting the many agencies and groups do their good work. They are Welfare/Social, Natural Environment, Built Environment and the Rural Economy.

Alongside this, Council has a Mayoral Relief Fund. The fund helps where an immediate need exists. The outpouring of support from communities all over the country in the wake of the May weather and flooding event has been incredible and the relief fund provides a further avenue of support for those in need. Further information can be found here Emergency Relief Fund.

Last week, the Prime Minister announced a $4 million support package for flood affected farms in Canterbury. It is intended that the package will support uninsurable work like flood debris and shingle clean-up. MPI are currently working on establishing the criteria for farmers to access this funding and Council will provide more information as and when it becomes available.

It is now free for residents to visit their GP for free for flood-affected health needs. Simply let your medical practise know when you make your appointment that it is flood-related.

If you need help, please don’t hesitate to reach out and connect with others. If you know of friends or family that have been affected by the flood, pick up the phone and check in with them. Also available is the free counsellor service, simply call or text 1737.
