Waka Kotahi NZTA advisory for Walnut Avenue traffic lights project:

We want to alert you to a closure of Walnut Avenue beside the Ashburton Domain.

During Wednesday night shift we discovered that existing ground conditions in this vicinity were particularly poor.

This was unexpected as we have dug multiple test pits across the project site but the ground conditions in this area are very soft - something we discovered when we dug down to prepare for the permanent pavement.

The soft ground means we will have to dig deeper before we lay the new pavement and while we do this, it is not safe to keep the road open. The urgent closure of this section of Walnut Avenue will allow us to get this extra work done as quickly as possible.

We have scheduled the closure for a week but we are hoping it won't take that long.

We are very sorry for this additional disruption.  We will make sure that local residents can access their properties and we encourage you to get in contact with us on the number below if you are having any difficulties.
