Skatepark users survey results in installation of new rubbish and recycling bins

New rubbish and recycling bins with 'street-cred' will be installed at Ashburton’s skate park following a survey of users.
Members of the Ashburton Youth Council (AYC) commissioned the bins after surveying skaters and visitors last month during their Skate Jam event, which attracted about 150 people.
Survey results identified the bins as an area of concern so AYC members have been working with Council staff and Council's waste sustainability education contactor, Eco Educate, on a solution.
The new bins will be installed by the Council and include a glass and recycling unit, and a separate general waste bin. They will be located at the southern end of the skate park.
Councillor Lynette Lovett said the skate park is a popular hangout and the new bins would encourage users to have pride in the park and help keep it tidy.
“The new bins will be almost identical to the new bins going in as part of the CBD upgrade,” she said.
Youth Council members have started working on creating designs for the recycling and glass bins, with help from Eco Educate.
The bins should be ready for use by August.
Skate Jam was the first of four main events hosted by the AYC. The next AYC event will be the NZ Mountain Film Festival on Saturday, 7 August, beginning at 7 pm at the Ashburton Trust Event Centre.
