Road repairs and resurfacing get underway in Ashburton

Published: 20 November 2020

The arrival of warmer weather in Mid Canterbury has signalled the start of the district's busiest time for roadworks, with several repairs getting underway around Ashburton this month.

Through its two major roading contracts, the Council invests millions maintaining, sealing and upgrading the districts 2,600-plus kilometre network and some of the first cabs off the rank this month have been Park Street, Walnut Avenue and Racecourse Road.

Road resurfacing contract 2020-22

Ashburton Contracting's (ACL) two-year resurfacing contract officially kicked off this month with repairs on Park Street and Walnut Avenue. With the help of Fulton Hogan, 'milling' has been carried out on parts of these roads where there is a surface failure before the road is then resealed.

The contractors cut into the road surface and remove a small layer off the top using a milling machine, ensuring any damage to the road surface is fixed and prepped ready for the new seal.

Park Street resurfacing is now finished and work on Walnut Avenue is now well underway.

A total of 92 lane kilometres of road will be resurfaced around the district this season.

Fulton Hogan is finishing up the last of this five-year contract on Racecourse Road on the northern end of Ashburton.

Digouts - a deeper repair than milling that cuts into and fixes pavement failures, has been underway along the road.

As sealing is weather-dependant, it is hoped that the contractor wil be able to finish work on Racecourse Road on Monday 23 November.

Motorists are being advised to travel with care around these roadworks, as driving too fast damages the work already completed.
