New helpline available for residents in need during COVID-19 lockdown

Mid Canterbury residents needing help accessing essential household goods and services during the COVID-19 lockdown can now find help through a new local helpline.
Canterbury Civil Defence Emergency Management (CDEM), in partnership with all Canterbury district and city councils, has launched the helpline to assist vulnerable people to access the essentials such as food and medication.
Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown says the service will particularly assist the elderly, those with disabilities and people who are unable to access adequate transport support.
"This new service is being provided in addition to other support measures already operating in the community. It will help those in need to access things like food, water, clothing, and medication as well as baby needs and pet needs.
"If you are able to provide for yourself during this time, please help keep this service effective by keeping the lines free for those who need urgent assistance.
Residents who need support are urged to call 0800 24 24 11 between 7am and 7pm, any day of the week. Callers needing assistance will be directed to the Council's CDEM team, who are working in the district's Emergency Operations Centre.
