Help celebrate Welcoming Week in Ashburton

Helping newcomers to feel more at home in Mid Canterbury will be the focus of the Ashburton District's efforts this month as part of Welcoming Week 2020.
Welcoming Week is happening from Monday 14 September until Saturday 19 September and is intended to bring communities together to build strong connections and affirm the importance of welcoming and inclusive places.
This year, Ashburton District Council is partnering with Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network to facilitate a series of mini tours which will welcome newcomers the some of district's cultural facilities.

Ashburton District Mayor Neil Brown says the district has been working hard to help newcomers feel more accepted and celebrated in their new community, and Welcoming Week will be another great opportunity to do so.
"Newcomers are important members of our community, often bringing new perspectives and skills that enrich us all. We want to make sure that those who are new here get a chance to see and experience the range of cultural and sporting facilities that are available so that they can enjoy them, get involved and perhaps make new connections too.
"Be a part of our Welcoming Week activities this month and play a part in making our district an even more welcoming place where everyone can thrive," he adds.
Newcomers and locals alike are invited to join in the Welcoming Week activities at the official opening at 10am on 14 September at the Base Youth Centre. Attendees will be welcomed with a pōwhiri and morning tea before being taken on a tour of the CBD hosted by the Mid Canterbury Newcomers Network.
A different venue will host a tour each day until 19 September, as follows:
Tuesday 15 September, 10am - 12.30pm: Ashburton Museum (329 West Street, Ashburton). Learn about Ashburton's history and uncover what is behind the scenes on a special tour through the archives. Morning tea will be provided, followed by a tour of the thought-provoking exhibitions at the Art Gallery and a fun welcoming art activity.
Wednesday 16 September, 2pm: Ashburton Library (180 Havelock Street, Ashburton). Enjoy family friendly songs and storytime as well as a tour of the library. Bring your passport for an easy library card sign-up. Refreshments will be provided.
Thursday 17 September, 10am: EA Networks Centre (20 River Terrace, Ashburton). Tour the gym, stadium, aquatics centre and meetings rooms at the EA Networks Centre.
