CBD streetscape upgrades moving to Tancred Street

Published: 2 October 2020

The Council's $15 million upgrades to the Ashburton CBD streetscape are approaching completion on Cass Street, and from next Monday (5 October) work will begin on Tancred Street.

The town centre revitalisation project has been underway since January 2020 and with Cass Street almost finished, the next cab off the rank is Tancred Street. The contractors, Tru-Line Civil will install new stormwater sumps and construct new kerb and channel and road surface along the street.

Importantly, the works will transform Tancred Street into a one-way road from East Street.

From Monday, Tru-Line Civil will remove the old planter boxes and other road infrastructure between East Street and the AMI building on the northern side of the street. A one-way traffic lane will then be put in place there.

Once completed, work will swap to the southern side of the street between East Street and the Colour Plus building.

Work between East Street and the AMI and Colour Plus buildings is programmed to finish by 30 November 2020.

Upgrades will then move to the western end of Tancred Street (towards Cass Street) and this work is anticipated to be completed by 23 December 2020.

The CBD streetscape revitalisation project intends to help attract businesses back into the CBD and reclaim retail spend through upgrading the roads, footpaths, street furniture, landscaping and underground services.

The upgrades are being carried out on Cass, East, Havelock, Burnett, Tancred and Moore Streets.
