Ashburton rallies behind Australian bushfire appeal

The frontline services fighting the devastating Australian bushfires are set to receive almost $1,400 from Ashburton following a successful fundraiser coordinated by the Ashburton District Council.
Activities held at the EA Networks Centre, Ashburton Public Library and Council on 24 and 25 January raised $1,393 in donations to go to the NSW Rural Fire Service.
For a donation, visitors to the EA Networks Centre were invited to participate in a special Les Mills mashup workout in the stadium on 25 January, and gym staff competed against local firefighters in a stair-climber challenge.
Meanwhile, the Ashburton Public Library hosted an Australian-themed storytime where visitors were invited to make a donation.
Council staff also dressed in mufti and held a raffle to raise money for the cause on 24 January.
Ashburton District Mayor, Neil Brown says the fundraiser was a chance to direct much-needed funds to those affected across the Tasman.
"It's heartbreaking to see the sheer scale of loss and destruction wiping across Australia right now. The brave firefighters battling these blazes every day must be absolutely exhausted, and we want to do what we can to help them carry on with the extraordinary work that they're doing.
"I want to thank everyone in our community who gave so generously to this fundraiser, and to the teams who coordinated the activities. I'm sure this money will be greatly appreciated."
The NSW Rural Fire Service is the lead combat agency for bushfires in NSW, and is widely acknowledged to be the largest volunteer fire service in the world.
Council staff will hold a second multi-day fundraiser on Friday 31 January to raise further funds for the bushfire appeal.
