Cameron St wastewater project in final stage

Part of Park Street is also affected by the Cameron Street wastewater project.

Work to install 230 metres of new wastewater pipe on Cameron Street is on track to be completed by the first week of February.

The work started in November near the intersection of Cameron and West Streets, and contractors have been working their way west, digging up the road to put in a main wastewater pipe and connecting some laterals (house connections).

The contractor has completed the original scope of works and is now finishing the second stage of the work, which includes completing the rest of the laterals and connecting to the live sewer main.

Group Manager Infrastructure and Open Spaces Neil McCann said the old pipe was laid in 1922 and in need of renewal.

“The contractors are putting in about 230 metres of wastewater main and about 80 metres of laterals, as well as replacing four manholes.

“The project was paused for three weeks over the Christmas break and equipment moved so that residents, pedestrians and motorists could move about freely, but traffic management is back in place now that the contracting crews have restarted for the year.

“We know that having roads closed is inconvenient at times, but renewing old wastewater pipes before they become a big problem is an important part of our maintenance of the network.”

The Cameron Street job will cost about $232,000 and is part of a wider $3.4 million contract that includes wastewater pipe renewals on Elizabeth Street, Wills Street, Princes Street, Kermode Street and William Street.
