Resource Recovery Parks

​​​​​​Resource recovery parks are where we separate recycling material from the waste stream and process rubbish
for disposal at the Kate Valley regional landfill.

This enables us to minimise the amount of material going to landfill which reduces costs and is good for
our environment.

We have resource recovery parks in Ashburton and Rakaia.​

​What can go to the Resource Recovery Parks

You can drop off the following recyclable or re-usable materials for free at both parks:

Household recycling

​Hazardous solid waste

​Hazardous solid waste can be dropped off for free, provided that the quantity is a domestic household quantity and doesn't exceed the maximum volumes allowed for each AND they are in a condition where they can be safely stored and transported.

Staff at the Resource Recovery Park must also have vetted and accepted the waste.

Re-usable items

​Re-usable items can be dropped off for free, provided that they are in a fair and re-usable condition AND there is a demand for the sale of the item through the Reuse Shop.

Staff at the Resource Recovery Park must also have vetted and accepted the items.

Ashbur​ton Resource Recovery Park

The Ashburton Resource Recovery Park is located at 25 Range Street in the Riverside Industrial area.

The Resource Recovery Park is open:

The Ashburton Resource Recovery Park is now open most public holidays - please refer to Public Holiday advertising.

You can dispose of all household rubbish (up to 120kg of rubbish will only cost you $26.00), greenwaste and construction material.

Official prepaid bags can be dropped off at the Ashburton Resource Recovery Park free of charge.  A bin for these bags is located in the recycling drop off area to save you having to go over the weighbridges.

Fees are payable (per tonne) for:

  • All general household rubbish
  • Greenwaste inclu​​ding garden and kitchen waste
  • Clean construction and demolition materials – concrete, bricks, wood, chipboard etc.

Rakaia Resource Reco​very Pa​​rk

 The Rakaia Resource Recovery Park is located at the corner of West Town Belt and Rakaia Terrace in Rakaia.

 The operating hours of the Rakaia Resource Recovery Park are:

  • Monday 10.00am-12.00pm
  • Wednesday 3.30pm – 5.30pm
  • Friday 2.00pm – 4.00pm
  • Saturday 9.00am – 3.00pm​
  • Closed on public holidays

You can dispose of all household rubbish, greenwaste and construction material at the park. You can drop off your official prepaid bags at the Rakaia Resource Recovery Park free of charge.

You will need to pay for the disposal of:

  • All general household rubbish
  • Greenwaste including garden and kitchen waste
  • Tyres

Fees for the disposal of rubbish and green waste are charged at a per cubic metre rate.

Materials not handled by your local Resource Recovery Park or recyclable​ ​drop-off site

These types of waste cannot be accepted:

  • Large tree timbers, stumps etc
  • Offal, dead stock / large animals
  • Bulk liquids
  • Radioactive wastes
  • Explosives
  • PCB wastes
  • Asbestos or products containing asbestos
  • Volatile fuels of more than 2 litres

 The Kate Valley Landfill on Mt Cass Road, Hurunui District receives:

  • Waste to landfill
  • Hazardous wastes
  • Special wastes

The Kate Valley Regional Landfill site is located within coastal hill country approximately 10 km to the north-east of Amberley off Mt Cass Road, Waipara.  It is approximately 9 km by road from the intersection of State Highways 1 and 7 (the Hanmer Springs turn-off).

Kate Valley​ is operated by Transwaste Canterbury Limited. Transwaste Canterbury Limited is a joint venture.  Half of its shares are owned by five local authorities (Christchurch City Council, Hurunui, Waimakariri, Selwyn and Ashburton District Councils), with the other 50 per cent of its shares owned by Canterbury Waste Services Limited.
