Do I need to register to open a mortuary or funeral director business?
Mortuaries and funeral director businesses require registration and inspection.
Mortuaries must comply with the Health (Registration of Premises) Regulation 1966 and funeral directors must comply with the Health (Burial) Regulations 1946.
How do I apply?
To set up a new premises please contact Council's Environmental Health Officer on (03) 307 7700 to discuss registration requirements.
Change of ownership
If you are taking over an existing business, you must notify Council and complete a transfer of registration form.
You can apply to transfer an existing registration into your name, but we must receive your application within 14 days of you taking over the business.
After 14 days, the existing registration will lapse and you will need to apply for a new one.
If the business is not registered, you will need to apply for a new licence.
Renew your registration
Licences need to be renewed every year (1 July-30 June). If you are currently registered, you will automatically be sent a renewal invoice.
