The law requires all dogs over three months of age to be registered.
Dog registration is due for renewal on 1 July each year. If your dog is registered, you will be sent a re-registration form to the most current postal address you have listed. If you get a new dog you need to ensure it is registered with Council. Owners who do not register their dog may be issued with an infringement and fined.

Please ensure Council is advised of any change of ownership or address and let us know if your dog has passed away, as you may be entitled to a partial refund of the registration fee.
Re-registering your dog online is the quick and easy option.
When registering online, ensure you are using the most up-to-date version of your browser (e.g Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Chrome) as some older versions are unable to display our online services.
Important: When registering online, dogs that have not been registered with Ashburton District Council before are classified as a 'new dog', and this option must be selected when registering. For dogs that have been registered with Ashburton District Council before, they are a 're-registration'.
If your dog's registration details have changed, such as a new address, ownership or they are now deceased, you will need to contact Council by email or phone, and staff will update your changes before you can then re-register your dog online. Registration details cannot be changed online, they must be updated in our office. Alternatively, you can visit the Council office at 5 Baring Square West to change these details and register your dog. Re-register your dog online
When owners register a dog the standard breed, secondary or cross breed and predominant colour of the dog must be recorded. This information is required to be recorded on the National Dog Database.
The colour(s) of the dog must be one listed in the approved colour list.
RDO status is a special dog owner status that recognises good, responsible dog owners and entitles them to a reduced annual dog registration fee.
To acquire RDO status, please refer to Section 4 of Council's Dog Control Policy.
Applications must be received and approved prior to 30 April in any year to enable the successful applicant to gain RDO status.
