Ashburton District Council is now looking for new members to join the Youth Council for 2014.
The Youth Council was formed in 2000 following suggestions from Ashburton's young people and began with 7 members. Today, thirteen years on, the Youth Council has 12 members.
With several members moving on to tertiary study or other new endeavours, the Youth Council needs new blood to fill the gaps and is calling all youth aged 15 – 24 from all corners of the Ashburton District.
Council Project Officer Rachael Boyd says it is very important to have representation from Methven, Ashburton and the rural community.
"We currently have two Methven representatives providing links with those communities and we would also welcome young people from Hinds and all other corners of the district," she said.
Mrs Boyd says it is also essential to have a broad range of interests, ages, cultures and experiences.
"Currently the majority of members are students but there are a few representing the post school working youth, and this is a group we really want to encourage." she said.
The Youth Council provides an important link between Council and younger members of the community. Their opinions are sought on a range of Council decision, not just youth related issues.
The Youth Council also supports the wider local youth community by providing activities.
