Ashburton District Council (ADC) has made progress in determining the potential future use of the former i-SITE building located in Ashburton. Recent discussions held with representatives from ADC, the Ashburton Information Hub Committee and Experience Mid Canterbury, the existing tenant, have been very productive.

“We are happy to report that Council is making progress in the evaluation and review of Ashburton Information Hub Committee’s proposal to establish a new Ashburton Information and Tourism Hub, or ‘Ashburton Info Hub’, at the former i-SITE building,” said Chief Executive Hamish Riach.

The group presented their proposal at the 18 October Finance and Business Support Committee meeting, but the item was closed to the public due to the commercially sensitive nature of the proposal and a request for confidentiality from the Information Hub Committee. Discussions between Ashburton District Council staff, Ashburton Information Hub Committee, and Experience Mid Canterbury, have been ongoing.

“There is clearly strong interest in the Info Hub proposal from Experience Mid Canterbury who work in the complementary area of the promotion of tourism, and currently use the facility,” explained Riach. “We are collectively working to find common ground to benefit the Ashburton area,” he said.

The outcome of this latest meeting and the Council’s intention to further explore this opportunity allows the Ashburton Information Hub Committee to now provide further information as part of the ongoing process.
