Ashburton District Council is advising residents to continue to expect unpredictable and unusually strong ocean currents, following the lifting of the National Tsunami Warning along the Mid-Canterbury coast.
Acting Environmental Services Group Manager Ian Hyde says the Tsunami Warning is still in place from Wellington to the Banks Peninsula, but the official warning to land and marine areas in the Ashburton District has been lifted.
"Whilst we are no longer expecting a tsunami to affect the District at this point, water conditions can still be dangerous. We advise the community to take care around beach and shoreline areas, as they may experience unusually strong and unpredictable currents for some time."
