Snow expected for Ashburton, road closures possible

Heavy snow is predicted for Canterbury, with snowfall possible from this evening (5 June) through until Wednesday morning.

Ashburton District Council is advising residents and visitors to prepare for the snow, which could close some roads in the district, particularly those in the foothills and including Ashburton Gorge Road.

“We advise that if you don’t need to travel, please try and stay off the roads tonight and tomorrow morning when the snow is expected to hit. If you must drive, please take extra care and drive to the conditions,” Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel says.

Drivers should carry snow chains if they have them, keep plenty of distance from vehicles in front and be cautious of icy roads.

People are also being advised to make sure they will be warm at home by having enough blankets or plenty of fire wood for a log burner, in the event of power outages. Keep an eye out for your neighbours, especially those who are vulnerable or elderly.

For information about road closures and any other issues related to the snow, listen to the radio or check the Council’s website www.ashburtondc.govt.nz or Facebook page.
