Residents are advised that a temporary road closure and subsequent signed detour will soon be in place while reconstruction work at the Martins / Dromore Hatfield roads site on Thompsons Track is carried out.
In August last year Council allocated an additional $1m of funding for Thompsons Track due to the number of potholes and other issues being continually reported and repaired along this road.
Councillor Stuart Wilson, Chairman of the Service Delivery Committee, says he is very pleased to see reconstruction work progressing well along Thompsons Track following additional funding Council allocated for this well used part of the district's roading network.
Set to start on February 9, the Thompsons Track road closure and subsequent detour will see traffic directed to Somerton and Rakaia Barrhill Methven Roads and vice-versa for eight weeks. There will also be a diversion in place in Rakaia to ensure local traffic is directed along the same detour route.
Council's Asset Management Engineer Geoff Rhodes says by temporarily closing the road during working hours and putting a detour in place, work can be done safely and the disruption to road users can be kept to a minimum.
"We were able to make good progress at the Braemar Road / Methven Highway site along Thompsons Track in recent weeks by using a signed detour so we'll be taking the same approach to diverting traffic when it comes to doing the reconstruction work at the Martins / Dromore Hatfield roads site on Thompsons Track."
As well as helping keep the traffic flowing smoothly in this area, the signed detour is also allowing Council to increase the length of the works on Thompsons Track over an additional 750m to the East of Martins Road to be completed within the same time period as initially programmed.
"Our initial berm and culvert installation works at the Martins / Dromore Hatfield roads site has progressed well under stop-go traffic control and we're now getting prepared for the reconstruction phase starting on February 9."
Work is still set to be completed at both Thompsons Track sites - including the additional 750m length - by the end of March.
Council would like to thank road users for their continued patience of the temporary road closures which will help ensure the additional work is completed within the original end of March time scale.
