Roadwork on Walnut Avenue railway crossing to start next week

Friday 30 June, 2017

Ashburton District Council is advising motorists to avoid the railway crossing on Walnut Avenue between State Highway 1 and East Street from Monday 3 July, when work will begin to resurface the road over the railway crossing.

Council is expecting to close the road across the railway line between 7am – 6pm on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday next week. Motorists travelling from East Street to SH1 will be able to cross on Monday and Tuesday nights, and those travelling from SH1 to East Street will be able to cross on Wednesday and Thursday nights. Detours will be in place throughout the work.

Council Projects & Operations Manager Viv Eyberg says the road will be milled out and a fresh layer of asphalt applied to improve the surface of the crossing.

“The condition of the road over the railway line is quite uneven, and we want to fix this up for road users. We were hoping to complete this work while renewing the wastewater pipes under the railway line last month, however we were unable to successfully co-ordinate the two jobs with KiwiRail, due to resourcing.

“We are pleased, however to be getting started next week, and would again greatly appreciate the community’s co-operation. They have been outstanding these last few months while we’ve been working in the area, and I would like to thank them for the understanding they’ve shown.”

The work across the railway crossing is expected to be completed on Friday 7 July.
