The names of candidates in Ashburton District Council's 2016 triennial elections will be in random rather than alphabetical order.
At last week's Ashburton District Council meeting, councillors agreed to have candidates' names arranged on ballot papers in random order.
The Council elections are being held in September/October this year and voting will be conducted by post using ballot papers.
Ashburton District Council Chief Executive Andrew Dalziel said that under the Local Electoral Regulations Act, Council can decide how the candidate names are arranged on the voting documents. Historically, this has been in alphabetical order by surname.
"With a random order arrangement, the candidates' names are shown in a different order on each and every voting document using specialised software," Mr Dalziel said.
