Ashburton District Council has confirmed today that it is well advanced in purchasing three properties on Baring Square East, to locate a new library and Council administration building.
The properties, which are all located near the former County Council building, are two lots of land owned by the Methodist Church (excluding the church building), 243 Havelock St and 255 Havelock St.
The Council has signed conditional sale and purchase agreements for 243 Havelock St and the Methodist church sites. "The property at 255 Havelock St has recently come on to the market and Council considered it opportune to buy it to assist in future proofing the development," Paul Brake, the Council's Group Manager Business Support said.
"These property purchases represent a milestone for this important Council project," he said.
"The new facilities are desperately needed to improve the experience of residents and staff visiting and working in our library and Council administration building."
The Council will shortly start the second stage of the project, which will include seeking a project manager, appointing architects and undertaking design work.
Further details (including the purchase prices) will be made public as soon as the purchases are settled.
