Parking restrictions have been introduced in Short and Winter streets to improve traffic safety near Ashburton Borough School.
The Ashburton District Council today approved a parking restriction of 15 minutes for both streets from 8am to 9.30am and 2.45pm to 4pm on weekdays.
Council's Group Manager Service Delivery Neil McCann said the school's roll had grown considerably in the last three years. More commercial activity in the area had also seen an influx of people using local streets for all-day parking.
"This is making it difficult for parents to find space to drop off and pick up their children during normal working hours," Mr McCann said.
Ashburton Borough School had originally asked the Council to restrict parking in Short and Park streets to 120 minutes, but at today's Council meeting, Councillors instead approved a 15-minute restriction in Short and Winter streets during specified times from Monday to Friday.
The restriction in Short Street applies to the school side, from the bus stop to Winter Street. In Winter Street, the restriction applies on the school side, from Short Street to the cul-de-sac.
"It's a sensible solution," Cr Alan Totty said. "Although people will be able to park for up to 15 minutes, not everyone will stay in their park for the whole time, making it much easier for parents at school pick up and drop off times."
New signs and road markings will be installed before the start of the 2016 school year.
