One last chance to register for futsal extravaganza

People wishing to be a part of the exciting, free futsal festival coming to the EA Networks Centre on 13 and 14 October now have one last chance to get their name down.

Registrations for the Welcoming Communities Futsal Tournament Extravaganza have been extended until Sunday 7 October, 2018. People interested can enter a team in the age group tournaments, or register for the junior skills clinic and ‘give it a go’ drop in session.

Futsal, meaning indoor football, is FIFA’s official five-a-side indoor football (soccer) game, and the inclusive tournament will be coming to town to help bring the community together and celebrate the district’s diversity.

The extravaganza is being organised by New Zealand Football, Immigration New Zealand, Ashburton District Council Welcoming Communities and Mainland Football.

“We have a number of teams signed up ready for a fantastic weekend of fun and laughs. The junior skills clinic is also proving popular, but we’d like to see even more people get involved. This is a rare opportunity for our district to not only come together over a great game, but also to see and learn from some of the best futsal players in the country, who will be at the event,” Ashburton Mayor Donna Favel says.

People are encouraged to register teams of between five and eight players for the junior, youth and adult tournaments that will be happening on the Sunday. Players don’t need to have had football experience, as the tournament is a non-competitive event and everyone is welcome.

Spot prizes will be up for grabs throughout the day, thanks to local sponsors Talleys Group Ashburton, Subway Ashburton, Ashburton Contracting Ltd, Mitre 10 Mega Ashburton, Nelson Building Society, Farmers Ashburton, Community and Public Health, EA Networks Centre, Frontrunner Ashburton, Russell Moon and Fail Lawyers, Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation, Ashburton Guardian App, and Fit For Life.

The tournament will kick off with a ‘give it a go’ drop in session on the Saturday evening between 5pm and 7pm, where talented futsal and football players will be on hand sharing their skills and helping to run game sessions. This activity is aimed at youth and adults.

A junior skills clinic will then run first thing on Sunday morning before the team tournaments get underway. A celebrity match between well-known locals and some of the country’s best futsal players will wrap up the festivities.

To register for the free Futsal Tournament Extravaganza activities, visit the New Zealand Football website  by Sunday 7 October.
