New public toilets will be installed at the entrance to the Hinds Domain.
The Ashburton District Council, Hinds Reserve Board and Hinds Citizens Association have been working together since late last year to choose the best location for the new facilities.
The three unisex cubicles, one of which will have wheelchair access, will be installed by the domain entrance in Isleworth Road, less than 50 metres from State Highway 1.
Open Spaces Manager David Askin said the Council originally recommended the toilet block be installed about 150 metres further down Isleworth Road, near the Southern Rugby Football Club changing rooms and proposed fire shed.
However, the feedback from the community was that the toilets should be closer to the domain playground and the main road. The Council took the community's views on board and agreed last week to install the toilets by the domain entrance - about 50 metres from the playground and still accessible to the travelling public.
Hinds Reserve Board Chairman Garry Brown said the community engagement process had taken time, but was "very worthwhile". "The community is very happy with the decision."
Mr Askin said the work would be completed in the next four months. Once the new toilets are ready, the old toilets by the rugby clubrooms and rifle range will be removed.
While installing new pipes for the new toilets, the Council will also upgrade the water reticulation system in the domain. Mr Askin said the upgrade would repair a water leak in the domain that had been causing issues for some years.
