New Ashburton District Council sworn in


​The Ashburton District's newly elected Mayor, Councillors and Methven Community Board Members have been officially sworn in as the districts new Council at the inaugural Council meeting today.

Mayor Neil Brown, Deputy Mayor Liz McMillan, and Councillors Leen Braam, Carolyn Cameron, Rodger Letham, Lynette Lovett, Angus McKay, Diane Rawlinson and Stuart Wilson all declared to faithfully and impartially serve the district, before signing their declaration.

Methven Community Board Members Kelvin Holmes, Dan McLaughlin and Ron Smith were also sworn in.

John Falloon (Ashburton Ward) and Sonia McAlpine (Methven Community Board) were unable to attend the meeting today and will be officially sworn in at the 31 October Council meeting and 4 November Methven Community Board meeting, respectively.

Mayor Neil Brown said it was both an honour and privilege to be representing the Ashburton District for the next three years.

"Today, myself and my fellow Councillors and Community Board Members have pledged to serve our district to the utmost of our abilities and to act in the best interests of our community. Being elected to lead and advocate for this district is an immense privilege and we are committed to upholding our responsibilities throughout our term.

"This is a particularly exciting time for our district, with the Ashburton town centre revitalisation and major infrastructure upgrades all unfolding in the coming months and years. I am proud to be serving as part of a team that brings both great experience and new perspectives to the table to navigate the years ahead."

Mayor Brown acknowledged former Mayor Donna Favel, and former Councillors Mark Malcolm and Selwyn Price for their service to the district at the meeting, and presented them their certificates of service. Former Councillor Thelma Bell will be presented her certificate at the 31 October meeting.

The new term of Council has established five standing committees that will govern Council matters, and appointed Chairs and Deputy Chairs to the committees.

Audit, Risk and Finance Committee - Leen Braam (Chair) and John Falloon (Deputy Chair).
Bylaw and Policy Committee - John Falloon (Chair) and Angus McKay (Deputy Chair).
Community Services Committee - Angus McKay (Chair) and Carolyn Cameron (Deputy Chair).
Environmental Services Committee - Diane Rawlinson (Chair) and Rodger Letham (Deputy Chair).
Infrastructure Services Committee - Stuart Wilson (Chair) and Lynette Lovett (Deputy Chair).

The first ordinary Council meeting will be held on Thursday 31 October at 1.00pm in the Council Chamber, 137 Havelock Street, Ashburton.
