The Ashburton District Council has approved the naming of a section of road off 1023 Tramway Road to be called "Old Gig Road."
An application by Tramway Road resident Alf Wightman was received by the Council and included background information on the area around a subdivision currently being accessed by an unnamed road.
Until today's decision the road was an unnamed grass road leading to the Mt Somers Raceway Block and its main function had historically been to provide access for people attending Race Days. The road is now a two-laneformed road.
Mr Wightman said his suggested name evoked the history of the site, including its association with horse racing and particularly with light two-wheeled horse drawn gigs.
