Ashburton will be getting into the Christmas spirit early this year with the first 'Light Up The Night' event on Friday 1 December.
Families are invited to come to Baring Square East by 7pm to see the movie 'Arthur Christmas' on a big-screen; join in some carol singing; and see the official lighting of Ashburton's new six-metre high Christmas tree. The Silver Band will also be playing Christmas music from 6.40pm.
Council is funding the event with support from EA Networks to help install the tree and decorations.
Ashburton District Council Community Relations Manager Vincie Billante says 'Light Up the Night' is about bringing Ashburton families together to celebrate the magic of Christmas.
"The focus is on young children and their families having fun together at a relaxed Christmas event," she says. "Baring Square East comfortably hosts about 600 people, so it will definitely be a case of being there early to get a good spot."
People are welcome to bring rugs and a picnic and there will be several food trucks offering everything from pizza to ice-creams.
Mayor Donna Favel will officially light the Christmas tree at 9pm, following a countdown from MCs for the night, Phil Hooper and Peter Mac, from Hokonui FM radio station.
The free event will be alcohol and smoke free.
If the event needs to be cancelled because of bad weather, announcements will be made on the Antenno app, the Ashburton District Council website and Facebook page, and on Hokonui FM radio station by 3pm on the day.
