Increased water use as summer conditions set in has prompted Ashburton District Council to implement level one restrictions on some schemes, effective from Friday 11 December.
The restriction applies to the Chertsey, Fairton, Hakatere, Hinds, Methven, Rakaia, Mt Somers and Mayfield supplies, while Ashburton and Lake Hood remain restriction-free.
Under the level one restriction, residents are only able to use a hose, micro-spray or automatic irrigation systems on alternate days rather than every day.
Council Infrastructure Services Group Manager, Neil McCann says as the weather continues to heat up, people need to think about their water use.
"When too many people begin upping their consumption, the water in the reservoir can start emptying quicker than the pump can replenish it. Ultimately this can disrupt the water service for some residents and in some cases the supply risks running out of water.
"Please ensure there is enough water for everyone by following the restrictions and being water-wise."
The restriction does not affect the permanent hosing bans already in place for Dromore, Methven-Springfield and Montalto.
