Important weather notice

Significant progress has been made today clearing roads of snow. Progress is being made on clearing the two Rakaia Gorge roads but work on these roads is unlikely to be completed until early next week. Clearing work will be continued over the weekend.

Following the heavy snow fall in the foothill areas of the district yesterday and overnight, the snow has eased however Methven has at least 28cm, with reports that the Staveley area has upwards of 50cm. We understand that there are power outages in the area as well.

Fulton Hogan operated 6 graders and several trucks with snow ploughs through to 2am this morning in those areas. They started street clearing in Methven at 6am this morning, and... will continue road clearing today.

The Rakaia Barrhill Methven Road has been cleared and roads east of Thompsons Track are reasonably clear. Forks Road has been cleared and they are working on the Ashburton Staveley Road.

Metservice has advised of the impending weather front that will hit the region today.

Our advice for people is to avoid travelling in the foothills or western plains from midday today until the storm passes.

We are expecting some snow so extra care is required on all the roads, and watch out for road clearing in the Methven and Mt Somers areas. As the weather clears, we encourage all drivers to drive to the conditions as there will likely be black ice on the roads.
