The ongoing wet weather has seen the district's sunshine bridges across the Hinds River washed out again on Thursday this week, resulting in the decision by Council to close the three crossings for the duration of the holiday period.
The three bridges, located on Hackthorne, Winslow and Boundary Roads had only just reopened this week following reinstatement after heavy rain last week.
"This is the fourth time in the past month that the approaches to these sunshine bridges have been washed out resulting in the river crossings being closed" Council Service Delivery Group Manager Neil McCann says. "This is a frustration for both Council and road users with the disruption that the closures are causing. It is also coming at a cost to the ratepayer in having the repairs undertaken only to be washed out again within a few days."
"With more rain forecast to fall in the next couple of days, and again next week, the decision has been made to leave the three crossings closed over the holiday period. We hope to be able to get them repaired and opened for traffic early in January" Mr McCann adds.
