Locals and newcomers alike will be able to meet on the Village Green between the Blue and Brown pubs and enjoy a free sausage sizzle, live entertainment and a wacky game of chicken curling. The blue Start with a Smile Couch will also make an appearance for residents to take a seat and share a smile.
Ashburton District Council Community Relations Manager Vincie Billante says the family-friendly event is an initiative aimed at making the district an even more welcoming place to live.
"Methven is a buzzing community of people from all over the world coming there to live, work and play. The event's organisers wanted to create an experience that would encourage new friendships and stronger community ties while celebrating the town's colourful diversity," she says.
"We'd like to see locals coming along with their new neighbours, staff and friends and enjoy the festivities together. It's a great chance for families to make new friends and get to know the people who make Methven such a wonderful place to live."
The Great Methven Meet continues the positive work Council has been initiating with the 'Start with a Smile' campaign. 'Start with a Smile' aims to make Mid Canterbury an even friendlier place to live by encouraging locals and newcomers to smile at someone new and start a conversation.
The Great Methven Meet has been organised by the Methven Community Board, Ashburton District Council and Dave den Baars (Trev) from the Blue and Brown pubs.
The event will kick off at the Methven Village Green after the Swim Carnival at Methven Community Pool on Sunday 12 February at 4.00pm.
