Ashburton
District Council yesterday closed the car park at the end of Hakatere Drive at
the Hakatere Huts, following erosion near the car park at the weekend.
Drivers
will no longer be able to park their vehicles in the car park as a safety
precaution, after coastal erosion occurred on the cliff edge close to the car
park.
“Signage
has been installed in the area advising the community to not park in the area,
and we will also put a fence up to restrict vehicle access,” Council Roading
Manager Brian Fauth says.
“The
remainder of Hakatere Drive will remain open, and the community will still be
able to visit the area, however we encourage people to be cautious and to not
get too close to the cliff.”
Council
will begin fencing off the car park in coming days.
