Ashburton District Council has adopted three draft policies at its meeting today and will begin consulting with stakeholders from tomorrow, Friday 24 February.
Council will seek feedback from the community on the Appointment and Remuneration of Directors and Council Organisations; Local Government Official Information and Meetings Requests; and Use of Footpaths for Alfresco Dining draft policies.
The Use of Footpath for Alfresco Dining Draft Policy includes a clause recommending alfresco dining areas in Ashburton District are smokefree. The clause is intended to be 'self-policing' which means there will not be any penalties for patrons who still choose to smoke in these areas. Businesses will be encouraged to adopt their own internal smokefree policies.
One significant change in the Appointment and Remuneration of Directors and Council Organisations Draft Policy is a restriction on elected members and council officers from being appointed as directors to council controlled organisations and council controlled trading organisations. This does not apply to other council organisations.
Feedback on the draft policies will close 24 March 2017. Hearings and deliberations (if required) will be scheduled and the policies will then be presented to the April Council meeting for adoption.
