The Ashburton District Council adopted its new draft Smokefree Outdoor Areas Policy for consultation at its June Council meeting.
This will revoke and replace the Smokefree Playgrounds and Sports Fields Policy.
Council's proposed new policy is more restrictive in that it extends the designated smokefree areas to include the outside of Council buildings, playgrounds, sports fields, the Ashburton Skate Park and all Council sponsored events. This is in line with other territorial authorities and the central government Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 initiative.
Community Relations Manager Vincie Billante says the goal of a smokefree policy is to de-normalise tobacco smoking, and to allow smokefree access to community public spaces.
The draft policy and submission forms are available online and at the Council's reception area at the Civic Offices. Consultation on this policy is open until 31 July 2016.
