Ashburton District Council will be unable to reopen the closed section of Oak Grove this afternoon, following unforeseen problems with a part of the sewer mains they are working to replace.

Council’s contractor ACL has found an obstruction in the mains and is hoping to reopen the closed section of Oak Grove by 5pm tomorrow, Friday 27 January.

“We are waiting on a part called a bursting head to arrive today to continue work on the mains. It’s unfortunate that we are unable to reopen the road today, but we are doing our best to get the work done as quickly as possible,” Council Projects and Operations Manager Viv Eyberg says.

The north-bound lane of Oak Grove from Elizabeth Street to the Harrison Street roundabout has been closed since Tuesday 24 January while sewer main renewals are underway. Council had hoped to reopen the closed section of road today (26 January).

The work is part of Council’s ongoing programme to renew Ashburton’s sewer mains, which must be replaced when they have reached the end of their serviceable life. Renewing the mains helps ensure the network continues to function correctly.

Detours around the renewal works remain in place via Elizabeth Street, Cross Street and Harrison Street.
