Council seeks community support in reducing vandalism

Anyone who sees property being vandalised in the Ashburton District is being asked to report it immediately to the Police.

Ashburton District Council (ADC) is experiencing a marked increase in vandalism of public places and road signs and is appealing to local people to help combat it.

"It has been exceptionally bad in the last couple of months," Neil McCann, ADC's Group Manager Service Delivery said. "In October alone, we spent $7,800 on repairing vandalised road signs."

Mr McCann said the type of damage that had been occurring had involved significant time and effort from vandals. "They are probably spending enough time for someone to see them, so we're really encouraging people to stay vigilant and if they see anything to call the Police, once they are safe to do so."

The vandalism has been occurring across the district, including Rakaia where the Council has recently had to replace damaged toilets.
