Council removes Mt Somers boil water notice

The Ashburton District Council has removed the precautionary boil water notice for the Mt Somers water supply, with tests showing that the quality of the water has returned to normal.

Residents connected to the scheme are no longer required to boil their drinking water and can consume it as normal. The scheme was placed on a precautionary notice yesterday evening (3 September) after the Council detected high levels of turbidity in the water which was likely to have been caused by the heavy rainfall experienced the previous night.

The turbidity levels in the water have reduced and Council is satisfied that the water is being effectively treated again.

Turbidity is the term used to describe microscopic particles in water. Although the scheme’s treatment equipment was working correctly, turbidity can make it difficult for the equipment to effectively treat the water.
