Two Ashburton sites will glow with new Christmas lights this festive season.
Ashburton District Council will light up the Clock Tower and a large conifer tree in the Ashburton Domain from early next month.
Open Spaces Manager David Askin said Council often received feedback from the community about the lack of Christmas cheer around the town.
In the district's Long Term Plan, $30,000 was allocated for new festive lights in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
"The Clock Tower will have little twinkling LED lights and the Domain tree by the front gate will have colourful spotlights shining on it," he said.
Additionally, new lights are being installed into Baring Square West. These are moving to LED lights that can be programmed to change colour at various times of the year.
"The move to these lights as part of our replacement programme means an overall saving of over $40,000 for energy costs and replacement costs over the next 20 years," said Mr. Askin.
Council planned to use the new lights for other occasions as well. It will also look at partnering with local businesses to produce festive displays next year.
