Ashburton District Mayor Donna Favel is supporting the call
from Canterbury Mayors for a declaration of state of Regional Emergency from
the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management.
Civil Defence Regional Controller Neville Reilly briefed
Canterbury Mayors at an emergency meeting as to the state of affairs in Hurunui
and Kaikoura Districts.
Mayor Favel says, “Our concerns are that we need to work
together to ensure the support is there at a regional level due to the damage
sustained in both of these districts.”
“Our economy is based on the ability to transport goods via
road or rail, and with the damage on SH1 and the railway through Kaikoura, the
impacts will be felt throughout the South Island for quite a long time until
repairs can be done,” she adds.
The Council’s Civil Defence is sending trained staff to
support the relief efforts in Hurunui at the Emergency Operations Centre.
