Ashburton District Council has approved additional funding of $28,000 to the Mount Somers Fire Station Extension to account for improved cost estimates of the project.

Council has increased the budget from $121,000 to $149,000 after preliminary plans for the facility’s extension provided a clearer indication of total costs.

“Following discussions between Council and the Mount Somers Fire Unit, we’ve been able to establish more detailed plans for the extension, which includes building, plumbing, drainage and design costs. We’ve also learnt since the original budget was set that we need to install a shower,” Council Commercial Manager Colin Windleborn says.

Council is working to bring the Mount Somers Fire Station up to the standard of other rural fires stations in the district, with extensions needed to install a meeting room, kitchen and toilet.

The work will also include a disability accessible toilet for the public, following community requests for a toilet to be available at McClimont Green, adjacent to the fire station.

Council had previously increased the project’s budget from $45,000 to $121,000 in May 2016.
