Ashburton District Council is advising residents to be well prepared for the possible severe weather this weekend.

Council Emergency Management Officer Don Geddes says the district's Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) is on standby for the weekend and staff will continue to monitor the situation.

Mr Geddes advises residents to be prepared and listen for updates on their local radio station and take note of any warnings issued. Information is also available on the MetService website.

"Please ensure you have an emergency kit and ensure any outdoor furniture and fittings are well secured," he said.

Council Services Delivery Manager Neil McCann advises residents to keep safe on the roads and keep an eye out for possible surface flooding and fallen trees.

"Avoid driving unless necessary and if you have to, remember to drive to the conditions," he said.

"Council staff and contractors will be on call over the weekend to respond to any urgent requests for service." he said.

Residents can contact Council at any time on 03 307 7700 to report flooding or other issues that arise from the storm.
