Ashburton schools not affected by MOE school closure notice

Ashburton District Council is advising residents that the Ministry of Education has advised schools in the Ashburton District are still open. The Ministry of Education has closed schools in North Canterbury through to Wellington until they are assessed for structural damage, but at this time Ashburton schools remain unaffected.

Acting Environmental Services Group Manager Ian Hyde reports that there would be a business-as-usual approach for the building services team to check for signs of structural damage for public buildings, but as of yet there are no reports of building damage within Ashburton District.

“If anybody has any concerns over their building, we strongly suggest getting a structural engineer to assess the building thoroughly, as Council building inspectors can only assess buildings for public danger,” he says, adding “Council has not received any reports of any buildings that pose a public threat, including schools, so based on the information from Wellington we are operating as normal and are advising people to carry on but keep aware of the Civil Defence updates as they come through.”
