Ashburton Youth Council will go head to head against Ashburton District Councillors at a debate held later this month during Youth Week.
The Youth Council and Councillors will debate the importance of university qualifications for youth in today’s job market in a debate held at the Ashburton College Auditorium on Monday 23 May.
Youth Council member Joe Penno says the debate will be a great opportunity for the public to see the two representative Councils come together in a fun and competitive activity.
"We don’t usually have this chance to interact with the Council in such a cool way."
"Having a debate will showcase our passion for the district, and I think we’ll really surprise the Councillors with our arguments."
Nominations for affirmative and negative teams was decided at a Council meeting today, where a coin toss awarded Council as the affirmative team and Youth Council as the negative.
The community is invited to the debate, which has been organised by the Youth Council as part of their plans for Youth Week 2016. Entry into the event will be a gold coin donation, with proceeds going to Canteen.
The debate will start at 6pm on Monday 23 May in the Ashburton College Auditorium.
